Our governance and organization

Overseen by the Board of Governors and managed by Vice-Chancellor Graham Baldwin, Solent University is organized into five academic schools and a range of supporting services.

The ceremonial head of the University is our Chancellor, Theo Paphitis.

Our structure

The University is organised into five academic schools and a range of professional services, providing everything from academic and admin support to library services and sports provision.

School of Art, Design and Fashion (ADF)

This school is a thriving creative hub with a portfolio of courses including illustration, fine art, photography, interior decoration, graphics, make-up, product design, architectural technology and construction.  The School has helped ensure our nomination as one of the UK’s most creative universities in the Which? University student surveys (2013 and 2014).

School of Business, Law and Communication (BLC)

This school delivers an extensive portfolio of courses including business management, accounting and finance, economics, law, journalism, marketing, advertising and entrepreneurial studies. The School also holds the Small Business Charter award, and offers extensive support for student start-ups and entrepreneurs.

Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering (MSE)

This school incorporates the world-renowned Warsash Maritime Academy and Warsash Superyacht Academy. It offers a range of professional training and courses in yacht design, engineering, shipping, maritime studies and much more.

School of Media Arts and Technology (MAT)

This school offers a wide range of courses including broadcasting, film production, visual effects, animation, game design and acoustic technologies. Students and staff collaborate to work with professional clients and benefit from access to a huge range of professional equipment and facilities.

School of Sport, Health and Social Sciences (SHSS)

This school offers a range of accredited undergraduate degrees, top-ups, foundation years and master’s programmes. Course areas include sports coaching, personal training, sport science, psychology and social work.

Our professional services

Academic Services (AS) – Responsible for academic quality and standards, student records and compliance, academic partnerships, student achievements, including the management of graduation ceremonies, and student systems.

Estates and Facilities (E&F) – Responsible for providing and maintaining the University’s estate and buildings, as well as providing a wide range of support functions that underpin and support academic activities, including accommodation and conference services.

External Relations (ER) – Responsible for marketing and digital (including university websites), public relations and communications, UK student recruitment, admissions and enrolment, as well as alumni and development.

Finance Service (FS) – Responsible for core finance functions including procurement, liaison with funding councils and other regulatory bodies, student number planning, account payable, provision of management information and compliance with data / information requirements.

People and Development (P&D) – Responsible for recruitment and appointments; ensuring that the University fulfils its obligations as an employer; and developing and maintaining a working environment that supports the contribution of all university employees.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) – Responsible for the management and maintenance of the core IT infrastructure of the University.

International Office (IO) – Responsible for the development of international partnerships, EU and overseas student recruitment, and championing internationalisation across the University.

Research and Innovation Office (RIO) – Responsible for the graduate studies office, developing and supporting research, innovation and knowledge exchange across the University and with external research partners and stakeholders.

Solent Learning and Teaching Institute (SLTI)– Responsible for developing and supporting learning technologies, and managing the library and learning services.

Solent Sport (SS) – Responsible for delivering competitive and recreational sport, supporting elite athletes, managing coach education, running the community coaching programme, and the management and operation of facilities.

Strategy Development, Policy and Information Unit (SDPIU) – Responsible for providing detailed and authoritative information to guide the development of university policy, practice and strategic planning.

Student Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (SEE) – Responsible for employability, enterprise and student entrepreneurship.

Student Experience (SE) – Responsible for providing student services and course support, and for the management of the student hub.

Solent Global

Solent University is partnered with institutions and organisations all over the world, as well as attracting students from over 100 different countries. Our strengths in maritime, the creative industries and sports, are globally recognised and our ambition is to be internationally renowned for delivering excellence in everything we do.

By building strong relationships with like-minded organisations across the world, we know we will achieve this ambition and will therefore be better able to:

We know from employers that such experience is highly valued in graduates.  As well as our students, our staff are engaging with global partners to ensure that the experience our students receive is an international one.
